Important safety recommendations for commissioning the JUMO smartWARE SCADA

The security of your industrial processes and data is of the utmost importance. When starting up your JUMO smartWARE SCADA system, we would like to recommend the following safety instructions:

  1. Network segmentation: Ensure that your SCADA system is operated in an isolated network segment. This minimizes the risk of external threats penetrating your SCADA system.

  2. Updates and patches: Always keep your SCADA software up to date. Regularly install security updates and patches to close known security gaps. JUMO offers a software update service for JUMO smartWARE SCADA under the material number 00748787.

  3. Access controls: Implement strict access controls. Only authorized personnel should have admin access (root password) to your SCADA system. Use secret management services or Docker secrets if required.

  4. Safety guidelines and training: Develop clear security guidelines and train your employees regularly on security-related topics. Sensitize your team to potential security risks and the correct measures to take in an emergency. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. Use the security and password policies available in Keycloak.

  5. Data backup: Carry out regular backups of your SCADA. Keep these backups in a safe place and test the recovery regularly so that you can react quickly in the event of data loss.

  6. Availability: Ensure that the JUMO smartWARE SCADA server or the Docker containers are permanently monitored and functional. Set an alarm for each Edge Gateway used in the event of a communication fault so that you are notified by e-mail, for example, if a connection is lost. A maximum downtime and an associated alarm should also be set up for selected signals so that a signal failure is detected.

  7. Intrusion detection and monitoring: Use intrusion detection and continuous monitoring systems to detect and prevent suspicious activities at an early stage.

  8. Remote access: If remote access is necessary, use secured connections such as VPNs and restrict access to what is absolutely necessary.

  9. Emergency plan: Create a detailed contingency plan in the event of a security incident. This should contain clear instructions on what to do in the event of a security breach and should be tested and updated regularly.

By observing these security measures, you will make a significant contribution to securing your JUMO smartWARE SCADA systems and maintaining smooth operation. If you have any further questions or require support, please do not hesitate to contact us.
